Learning time management skills

Getting the balance right

Learning time management skills is one of the most important things that you can do to improve the quality of your life.  If you become more focused on getting through the things you need or want to do, you’ll free up lots more time.  This free time will allow you to spend time with family friends and on activities to build your happiness.

When I first started out in business I found that learning time management skills wasn’t a simple thing to do.  There were lots of theories but not a lot of practical do “a, b, c” type material.

So this section of the web site is a very practical section.  It provides short courses on topics that I hope will be of practical use to you on your time management journey.

This page allows you to access various online courses and pages.  I believe that spending time learning with these courses will save you time.  Most people when they get new software dive in and start to try things.  This isn't the best way to get up to speed.  Instead you need to take some time and learn the basics.  These courses will help you do just that.

The first topic that I've produced a guide for is HTML.  You hear a lot about HTML but often people don’t really know what it is.  HTML however is one of the most widely used formats today.  Every web page you read, including this one, is written using that format.  If you or your kids write a blog on-line then it’ll be written in HTML.

With a few simple pointers it’s possible to become proficient in HTML and understand how to make it work for you.   Soon you’ll be able to understand what tags are and how they affect the text and also how the overall page is structured.  You can find this guide by clicking HTML guide .

The next course I've produced is a computer tutorial.  Often people don't understand the basics of computers and are afraid to ask.  So this tutorial will provide simple and clear explanations of what a computer is.

If you know about computers then this course isn't for you.  However you might know someone who might benefit.  I wrote this course because I know a number of older people who have asked me many of the questions this course answers.

Excel is a great program.   Excel is often installed on computers but all too often people give up on it too quickly.  People don’t really understand what a spreadsheet can do and how it can help them.

With a bit of coaxing Excel can easily be used for keeping basic business information and even some stock control.  I explain this with an example that you can download.

Word is perhaps one of the most widely used word processors available today.  It allows you to not only type in text but provides a lot of options for formatting and text manipulation.  Recently the new versions allow for production of web ready text.

Becoming proficient in the use of Word is one of the areas that’s definitely worth pursuing.  In respect of learning time management skills I think it is essential (if you use Word for your word processor).  If you are able to use it well then typing letters and thank you notes becomes a breeze.  You’ll stop struggling with the programme and start focusing on your tasks, making you quicker and more efficient.

The third program in the Microsoft Office suite is PowerPoint.  This is used extensively in most of the businesses that I've worked for.  It is a powerful communications tool both for internal and external use and is definitely worth learning how to use.  This tutorial will let you master the basics quickly.

Microsoft Project is one of the industry standards for producing Gantt charts.  I've produced a course that explains how to set up a simple project.  This course goes through the basics and at the end you'll be able to produce and set up a simple project.

With so many pages to read in Learning time management skills, it can become quite daunting.  You'll often find yourself wondering how to read it all.  Well I've had that problem in the past myself and so I've added a course on speed reading.  This is something that really helped me.  It freed up lots of time and made reading more enjoyable.  Follow this course and practise and you could easily double or treble your reading speed.

You can read the course here in reading speed.

I’ve a number of other ideas for courses for this learning time management skills section including an internet tutorial and a computer tutorial.  If you’ve some thoughts on what you’d like me to tackle first then I’d love to hear from you. You can contact me at: learning@projecthuddle.com
